the French Riviera of California…

salton sea camping trip

Last week our good friends Zach and Adrienne tied the knot with a family celebration, but took some friend’s on a camping trip to celebrate.

We went to the Salton Sea which is a man made lake near Palm Springs, CA, a quick 4ish hour drive for us. If you have never heard of this place, I highly suggest reading about it, and if you have a chance, watching the documentary Plagues and Pleasures narrated by the awesomely quirky John Waters.

There’s a lot of interesting information out there so I won’t get too much into the details of the area, but a place once dubbed “the French Riviera of California” is now more recently called an ecological disaster.

We visited Slab City, a place where people can really go to live off the grid. Seriously check out this article for a great description of this town with an exiting sign reading “Warning Reality Ahead”. These pics are from the town stage, where they host talent shows, bands, and a prom- that a local cordially invited us to but we were a week early :)

The highlight of the area was definitely Salvation Mountain, one man’s folk art tribute to God. It reminded my of every acid trip you see in a movie, meets church. You can walk up to the top by following the “yellow brick road”.

In a nutshell, this place is a trip. We were so fascinated by the whole experience that we watched the documentary as soon as we got home and I was devouring articles on it the next few days. The Sociology major in me was intrigued :) If you live nearby, I recommend at least a day trip!

  1. That place looks like so much fun! Whenever we go camping we only travel one or two hours away. I’ll have to convince the hubby to try this place out sometime in the future.

It’s definitely not the prettiness you’d get up north and I wouldn’t recommend swimming in the water :) But maybe make it a stop on a Cali. vacation!

Ahhhh I’m SO so so wildly jealous. I’ve always wanted to go to salvation mountain! That’s on the tip top of the next big Westy road trip for us. All I want in life is a pic of the Westy in front of that thing. SOMEDAY!

I’m so intrigued by curious places like this. Now that I’m up late…I think I’m going to do some researching it myself. I’m a sucker for that kind of thing:) Anyhow…these are such lovely photos of this interesting place. Salvation Mt. almost reminds me of some Tarantino like movie set. What a fun way to celebrate a wedding!

What an interesting place! And you could set your tents up so close to the water too.. It looks kinda lonely & deserted. And pretty!

I’d love to go to Salvation Mountain someday. Not sure if I could convince Josh into making it an all-out destination, but we’ll see..

    Loved this post! :)Happy Friday..

I wouldn’t recommend it as *the* destination, but it’s an easy day trip from San Diego, LA, or Palm Springs. Which Palm Springs is FULL of mid century eye candy :)

What a cool way to celebrate a wedding! I’ve been meaning to go to Salvation Mountain ever since I saw it in a blog (I think it was Delightfully tacky?). Now I want to go even more! :)

Hope you guys have a fun weekend! ;D

    Hugs!
