photobooth: in the desert

lalafauxbois

As an Oregon native, I don’t think anything is prettier than pine trees, creeks, and waterfalls, but unfortunately those beautiful landscapes usually require lots and lots of rain. I’m solar powered and totally need sunshine to function so it’s a good thing that I’m fascinated by the desert too. It’s funny that after living here almost 12 years, you will still find me taking pictures of cacti.

These are some iphone snapshots from a couple of weekends ago, some of these you may have already seen on Instagram (@lalafauxbois). We stayed at a resort outside Tucson to celebrate a friend’s birthday. One perk of our extreme summer heat is that all of the resorts offer crazy summer rates, making it a fun getaway for locals too, although they WILL get you back with the $14 cocktails…

You know what? Desert is probably the hardest word for me to spell. I can never remember if it’s desert or dessert (an embarrassing mistake to make!) and have to look it up almost every time. Drives me crazy. Is there a word like that that you can never get right??

Brian is a film photographer and has been collecting cameras since he was a kid. Between the two of us we always look like a couple of tourists- him with a couple of cameras around his neck and me with my phone and Canon :) He generally adds a new photo to his Flickr everyday if you feel like checking out his work or following along!

Love these photos! I am a total desert rat – I lived in the Imperial Valley for twenty-six years. (I only very recently moved away, you see.) I do love pretty greenery, but don’t know if I could live around so much rain.

And yes, discounted rates are great. I’m itching to go back to Palm Springs sometime this summer to take advantage of the rates.

Oh that’s awesome! We went on a family trip to Palm Springs last Christmas, it was fun. I want to go back and look at all the awesome mid century houses!

  2. OMG! I have to look it up too! Heehee! Don’t feel bad ;) Is that a Mamiya C330?? I have one of those! It’s one of my favs!

  3. Amy says:

I remember it like this–dessert has two s’s because you always want two desserts. And desert has one because, well, it’s the desert and you don’t want more than one. :) Preeeeetty pics!

Haha I was totally going to post the same tip Amy did. Grade 3 lesson that stuck with me.
These photos are so beautiful, it’s like you can feel how hot and still…crisp(?) the air is. Being a southern Ontario resident, our climate isn’t unlike Oregon’s, and I’ve only ever been to the desert once. I keep dreaming of road tripping across Canada and the USA thought. I’m hoping to get an internship in Portland for next summer and the motivation to make that a reality.

Oooh a summer internship in Portland is the perfect time to be there! I hope you get it! It’s such an amazing city. I really want to spend more time in Canada. I went to Vancouver a few times when I was younger but really want to visit Toronto and Montreal!

      • Erin says:

I hope so too! I’m a Toronto native and I have to say it really is an amazing city, I miss living there so much! There’s so much to do and see, and more and more neat boutiques and coffee shops seem to open every day! I’ve been to Montreal several times and like it too, though it feels a lot like Toronto. I visited Quebec City last summer and LOVED it. Definitely the unsung hero of La Belle Province! Especially the old town. Cobblestone streets all up in there!

Looks so pretty! I’d love to troll through the desert with a camera. :)

My embarrassing always mis-spelled word is “embarrassing!” I always forget the 2nd r. UGH. I’m always looking for a substitute word so I don’t have to worry. haha
