shopping my own closet…

shopping my own closet

You know those items in your closet that you just can’t get rid of, even though you’ve had them forever and you barely wear them? This skirt and shirt have both been in my closet for about 10 years, but I don’t think I’ve ever worn them together before. The top is one of those cheap-o Forever 21 finds that you actually really love. It’s somehow held up countless washes but I’m worried any day now it will decide it’s had enough.

Although cleaning out my closet feels SO GOOD, I’ve never been able to follow that rule of “toss what you haven’t worn in a year”. There’s too many things I’ve rekindled with after they’ve collected dust for years!

But then on the flip side, there’s the fact that most my hangers are holding more than one item and Brian got the boot out of our little walk-in closet. So, maybe I should follow that rule for cleansing sake… Oh man, did Amanda’s post on hoarding really hit home :) Traveling is so good for perspective!

Man it’s tough for a nostalgic, sentimental collector to minimalize! What are your tips for curbing closet clutter?

  1. I love the little tie around the neck on the shirt! I am so bad at getting rid of things, but went on a little cleaning spree this morning before work with plans of thrifting some new fall things this weekend! Even if I don’t really LIKE an item anymore, I still cant get rid of it if it has any sort of memory attached to it, I am seriously the worst!
    happy Friday to you!

i have to say – having a quarterly clean out is a great idea! i do it – i give things to goodwill that i haven’t worn – general rule is if i haven’t worn it since the last season (like summer 2012 i didn’t wear it and now it’s summer 2013) i get rid of it. and i love this top – it’s so different and the colors are so perfect. and those shoes too! you have lots of fun things lurking in your closet it seems :D

I have just gotten rid of some clothes, furniture and miscellaneous stuff at the beginning of the year because I moved. Then late August I looked around and realized I still had way too much clothes and wanted more. But what I did was organize, be HONEST about what looked bad or what I wouldn’t wear, and let GO.

I think organization is the first step and honesty is the second.

  4. i def dont have a good hang on this still but feel like i’m getting there… i used to give stuff away every half year or so but still can think back to a few pieces I wish I’d saved so now I put stuff i havent worn for awhile in a box in the hall closet and maybe six months later take it out sometimes realize something needs a new life and sometimes not. but that’s also a luxury i didnt have when we lived in venezuela and mexico, just a few suitcase max there so i had to downsize a lot before going. anyway, i’m rambling but organizing things well helps to realize what i’m actually wearing. but that said, i love this bright cheerful outfit. i’d have never thought to pair those together but it looks great. hope you have some fun this weekend!

I know it’s hard but i say toss it! it makes room for cuter things that you’d probably wear ten times more than the things you toss on twice a year. dont become a hoarder ;)

I totally get this, I have so many vintage things I’ve collected over the years that really don’t fit, but I just can’t throw them out!

Ha! I have no advice except that I can’t TOTALLY relate.

Adorable outfit, Lisa! I’ve recently got rid of a few pieces of clothing I haven’t worn in like forever through a giveaway in my blog. Although I have to say this was the first time ever getting rid of clothes.

… I can’t wait to go to Buenos Aires to visit so I can bring all the things I couldn’t bring when I moved … I miss them, especially my shoes :/.

Hope your week’s off to a great start! ;D

I really hope that tops doesn’t call it quits anytime soon because I LOVE it. I am happy to say that after a few beers, the great REORG happened in my vintage hoarder/storage room in the basement Friday night. A friend came over right in the middle. Just in time to help me with the, “I HAVE NO IDEA IF THIS IS CUTE OR HIDEOUS ANYMORE” pile. I took 6 bags to thrift store, about 5 to the re-sale shop. I now have $300 in credit to the re-sale shop and I feel so good, dear!! I packed up the summer, and now have a SMALL and manageable rack for fall/winter. I am thinking that I will open the store again, and start small. I have to remind myself that this is a part-time love and it can’t overwhelm me. I want it to be fun, so I am keeping it simple. But I agree with you on holding onto items. SO MANY times I get rid of something, and then a year (or years!) later I am like, man why did I get rid of that. My tastes change, it seems, on a daily basis. I am at the point that I need to start doubling on the hangers, though, too, because it is JAM packed. :)

I agree with you. I can’t toss things out just because I haven’t worn it in a year. Sometimes I won’t wear something for a couple of years and then suddenly wear it non-stop!
