Some of you are probably too young to remember this, but flamingos really had their hay day in the ’80s. I was right there, in the thick of it, with my Miami inspired color palette and my bathroom that my parents decked out in flamingo accessories for me.
I remember a visit to the San Diego zoo, taking a roll of pictures on my 110 camera and pondering how something can balance on one skinny leg.
I had dreams of visiting Florida one day, my imagination led me to believe that flamingos wandered free in the Sunshine State, and white could be worn after Labor Day because it’s summer year round. Miami Vice proved that. Florida epitomized tropical living in my pre-teen brain and I knew that I was destined to leave grey, rainy skies for palm trees and beaches. Flamingos represented more than just regretful fashion kitsch- they symbolized my need to live under sunny skies.
Well, we know that story didn’t turn out as planned, I ended up in the west coast retirement capital instead of the east, and scorpions and lizards just aren’t as cute in my book. In all my U.S. traveling, I still haven’t even visited Florida which seems crazy to me! I’ve been told my imagination may have built it up a little, but childhood me needs to judge that for myself.
My friend Sara is a Florida native and excellent gift giver, and knew these plastic companions would make a perfect wedding gift. As an added bonus, my family was pretty surprised to see the flamingo fascination was still alive :)
I just realized I’ve never named the flamingos! Any suggestions? This entry was posted in outfits and tagged outfits, t-store scores, vintage. ← photobooth: in the desert right now… →
