Some of you are probably too young to remember this, but flamingos really had their hay day in the ’80s. I was right there, in the thick of it, with my Miami inspired color palette and my bathroom that my parents decked out in flamingo accessories for me.

I remember a visit to the San Diego zoo, taking a roll of pictures on my 110 camera and pondering how something can balance on one skinny leg.

I had dreams of visiting Florida one day, my imagination led me to believe that flamingos wandered free in the Sunshine State, and white could be worn after Labor Day because it’s summer year round. Miami Vice proved that. Florida epitomized tropical living in my pre-teen brain and I knew that I was destined to leave grey, rainy skies for palm trees and beaches. Flamingos represented more than just regretful fashion kitsch- they symbolized my need to live under sunny skies.

Well, we know that story didn’t turn out as planned, I ended up in the west coast retirement capital instead of the east, and scorpions and lizards just aren’t as cute in my book. In all my U.S. traveling, I still haven’t even visited Florida which seems crazy to me! I’ve been told my imagination may have built it up a little, but childhood me needs to judge that for myself.

My friend Sara is a Florida native and excellent gift giver, and knew these plastic companions would make a perfect wedding gift. As an added bonus, my family was pretty surprised to see the flamingo fascination was still alive :)

I just realized I’ve never named the flamingos! Any suggestions?

I love this story! :) I have always ALWAYS dreamed of living somewhere warm. But alas, I cannot seem to leave the midwest! My mom actually lives in Florida. In a retirement community with her hubs (Hello Golden Girls!). And it’s beautiful and sunny, but I could never ever live there. I would have to drive a white truck and listen to country or bad pop music forever. And shop at Ron Jon’s surf shop. Nope. Can’t see it. The ocean is the best part by far. AND you’re petting the falmingoes…aww…Yes! They need names!
I even named my dressforms (Gertrude and Alice). They need old people names, being from the sunshine state. Like Ernest and Phylis, or Bernice and Benny. :) I’m sure you’ll think of something. Have an amazing weekend girl. So this is turning into the longest comment everrr. Sorry. I also of course, love this outfit. I need more shorts in my life. One pair is just not cutting it. I think I may buy a few pairs and try to hem them. I just can’t find any as is that I like (thrifted).

Oooh, I do remember the flamingo era pretty well! :P And I think you should definitely go to Florida one day to get it out of your system. That’s the reason why I think I should still try to see the NKOTB live one day, hehe.

As for names, I vote for Chomsky and Saussure! 2 great linguists! :P

Have an awesome weekend, sweet Lisa! ;D

Oh I know what you should name them!

    Flamingo 1 & Flamingo 2

Cuuuute! I’m scarily close to accepting yard ornaments as allowable kitsch at our house – my weirdness hasn’t ventured outdoors yet & I’m a little nervous.

So. You have definitely inspired me here. :)

  8. What a great present! I have serious flamingo envy – I just bought a flamingo brooch but it doesn’t compare to these.

I would SO go visit a place where flamingos roamed free!
