design resources

I thought I’d share a few of my favorite resources for design inspiration and downloads. These are all really helpful if you work in the design field, but can also be a great resource for bloggers too!

1. Lost Type Co-op- This is a great source for fonts, from retro to really usable faces. It’s a name-your-price system, so essentially the fonts can be free if you type in $0 at download- although it’s nice to give something to the creaters and 100% of your donation goes directly to the designer.

2. Skillshare- I am so addicted to Skillshare. They have classes on a variety of subjects, but I’ve only taken some in the design category. The ones I’ve taken are all mostly videos with text summaries, additional resource links, and an optional project. If you do the project, you can upload it to the class with notes and questions, and get feedback from your “classmates” and sometimes even the instructor. Sometimes the classes will have a contest associated with the project as well. They are usually $20 per class (but range from free to $25) and well worth the money. You can also typically find a discount code on their Facebook page or through the instructor’s Twitter or blog, OR if it’s your first time taking a class there, use this link for $10 off (and a credit for me too!)

3. Creative Market- This site is awesome for finding illustrations, icons, fonts, and templates for really reasonable prices. I’ve also found some new favorite designers through this site. Every Monday they release 3 items for free download, available until the following Monday. If you sign up for their mailing list you get a reminder every week, which is helpful for forgetful people like me. It’s anything from a font, icons, WordPress template, Photoshop actions, or illustration pack, and you can choose which ones you want to download. If you are a designer/illustrator you can even set up a shop on there to make some extra money and gain exposure.

4. Spoon Graphics- This is the blog of designer Chris Spooner and he regularly gives helpful tutorials or links to other great resources. He offers a lot of step-by-step tutorial to creating something in Illustrator or Photoshop which is a fun way to learn tools and tricks to use later in your own designs.

I always love finding new design resources/blogs so if you have some suggestions leave them in the links!

  3. Currently trying to spruce up my blog a little bit so these are really helpful! My boyfriend is a graphic designer, but I’ve really been trying to learn things on my own because I think its fun and don’t want to have to rely on others to make things look the way I want!
    Thanks for sharing girl! :)

That is a good connection to have :) I know what you mean- my husband is a web developer which comes in handy, but sometimes I wish I could do it on my own!
